What ChatGPT does

ChatGPT is OpenAI's consumer AI product, built on the GPT-4o model. It is the most widely used AI assistant in the world — over 100 million weekly active users as of 2024 — and that scale shows in how complete the product feels. It handles writing, coding, research, image generation, voice conversation, and document analysis in a single interface.

The free plan gives access to GPT-4o with daily usage limits and includes web search and limited image generation. That is a more complete free offering than most competitors. The Plus plan ($20/month) raises those limits substantially. The Pro plan at $200/month is aimed at heavy power users and researchers who need access to o1 Pro and higher compute allocation.

For most people, the question is not whether to use ChatGPT — it is whether to pay for it.

ChatGPT is the easiest entry point into AI image generation. DALL-E 3 is built directly into the chat interface — you describe what you want, and it generates the image in the same conversation. Free users get a limited number of generations per day; Plus users get more.

The image quality is good for marketing graphics, social media visuals, and concept mockups. It is not competitive with Midjourney for photorealistic or artistic work, and it struggles with text inside images. But for someone who needs a header image for a blog post or a quick visual for a presentation, it is fast and good enough.

The key advantage is that you never leave ChatGPT. You can write the blog post and generate its images in the same conversation, which saves meaningful time versus switching between tools.

Advanced Voice Mode

ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode is the best voice AI product available to consumers. It responds in real time, adjusts its tone based on context, and can handle interruptions naturally. The experience is closer to a phone call than to dictating commands.

For language learners, it is a genuinely useful practice partner. For people who process information better by speaking than typing, it changes how they can use AI. For hands-free use — driving, cooking, exercising — it is the most practical option.

Claude has a basic voice feature. Gemini has voice capabilities. Neither comes close to ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode in naturalness or responsiveness as of mid-2026.

GPTs and third-party integrations

OpenAI's GPT Store lets users build and share custom versions of ChatGPT trained on specific instructions and knowledge. There are thousands of GPTs available — customer service bots, coding assistants, writing coaches, legal research tools. If your use case is common enough, someone has probably built a GPT for it.

ChatGPT also connects to third-party services through plugins and Actions. You can link it to your calendar, your email, or your project management tool and interact with those services through the chat interface.

This ecosystem is ChatGPT's clearest moat. Claude does not have an equivalent. If integrations matter to your workflow, this is a meaningful difference.

Who should look at alternatives

If your primary use is long-form writing — articles, reports, documentation — Claude produces better output and holds a specific voice more consistently. The quality gap is noticeable on pieces longer than 1,000 words.

If you are a professional developer working on large codebases, a dedicated code editor like Cursor (which uses Claude under the hood) will serve you better than ChatGPT's chat interface.

And if you are on the $200/month Pro plan and your main use is writing or basic research, you are almost certainly overpaying. The Plus plan at $20/month covers 95% of what Pro offers for most users.
