What Canva AI does

Canva's AI features live inside Magic Studio, a suite of tools built into the standard Canva interface. The main tools: Magic Write generates marketing copy inside your designs, Magic Design creates layouts from a text prompt, Dream Lab generates images from text descriptions, Background Remover cuts subjects out of photos, and Magic Resize adapts a design to different dimensions automatically.

All of these work within Canva's drag-and-drop interface, which most people already know. There is no new tool to learn — the AI features appear as options within the workflow you are already using. This is the real advantage over standalone AI tools: it removes the friction of switching between a design tool and an AI assistant.

Magic Design and templates

Magic Design is the most impressive of Canva's AI features for non-designers. You describe what you need — "a LinkedIn post about a product launch, professional tone, blue and white" — and Canva generates several layout options using its template library as a starting point.

The results are not original designs. They are template fills — existing layouts with your content dropped in. For most marketing content, that is exactly what is needed. A social media post, a presentation slide, a flyer: these do not need original design work, they need a professional-looking template with the right content.

For anything requiring genuinely custom design — a brand identity, a custom illustration, a complex layout — the template-based approach runs out of headroom quickly.

Dream Lab — AI image generation

Dream Lab is Canva's AI image generator, using diffusion models to generate images from text prompts. The results are usable for generic stock photo replacements, abstract backgrounds, and simple concept illustrations.

The quality is inconsistent. On simple prompts ("professional woman at desk, natural lighting") it produces reasonable results. On complex prompts or anything requiring text accuracy, precise faces, or specific compositions, it struggles. For high-quality AI images, Midjourney or Adobe Firefly produce more reliable results — but they are separate tools, which means leaving Canva.

For the occasional image need within an otherwise Canva-based workflow, Dream Lab is convenient enough. As a primary image generation tool, it is not competitive with dedicated alternatives.

Pricing

Canva's free plan includes access to most AI features with daily usage limits. This is generous — most users can do meaningful work on the free plan without hitting limits unless they are generating images heavily.

Canva Pro is $15/month and removes most limits, adds the full brand kit, premium templates, and higher export quality. For a small business using Canva daily for marketing content, the Pro plan is almost always worth it. The free plan is better suited to occasional users or people evaluating before committing.

Who should use different tools

If you need custom brand design — logos, identity systems, custom illustrations — Canva AI is not the right tool. Canva is fundamentally a template-based system, and the AI features work within that constraint. A professional designer using Figma or Adobe Illustrator will produce results that Canva cannot match for brand work.

If you need high-quality AI images consistently, Midjourney produces significantly better results, particularly for photorealistic or artistic work. The trade-off is that Midjourney requires leaving Canva and operating in a separate interface.

For non-designers producing routine marketing content — social posts, simple presentations, basic marketing materials — Canva AI is the right tool. It covers the majority of content needs without requiring design skills or a large monthly budget.
